We introduced this Dr Dakota Neck Cushion primarily for CPAP and Non-invasive Ventilator users to help keep the chin supported to encourage nasal breathing and prevent the chin falling out of the bottom of the mask.  It is a good alternative to chin straps, which don't suit everyone as in some people they can cause the jaw to fall backwards, thus making the apnoeas worse.

This should also help many snorers, but please note we never encourage people to treat their snoring without also investigating to see if the cause of snoring is sleep apnoea, which is dangerous if untreated!

*We are looking forward to the new upgraded version of this and sorry we have no stock left of these original versions.

This Neck Cushion/Chin Support is unique in that, unlike most neck cushions/collars it only has the bulk of the cushion at the front, ensuring it is more comfortable when lying down.  The back has a comfortable adjustable thin strip to secure the neck cushion in place.

We at the charity have been trialling it (like we do with all of our products before releasing them) and one of our trustees has a serious neck injury, but she found it caused no more discomfort that she already lives with, and if anything it offered her extra support by preventing her neck falling forwards during sleep.

Keeping the chin supported has many positives, for which this product can help with, for both mask users and general snorers:-

  • Encourages nasal breathing, which is healthier when possible.
  • Helps minimise snoring.
  • Helps prevent dry mouth, for which one of the causes is mouth breathing, which as well as causing discomfort, can result in tooth decay.
  • For nasal mask  users it helps prevent the mouth opening, which can result in a loss of pressure from the CPAP and also cause interrupted sleep.
  • For full face mask users it helps prevent the jaw dropping which can cause mask leaks.

Beneficial for Travel Too!

This Dr Dakota neck cushion has an added benefit for travelling, and whilst it does not claim to stop the apnoeas, it may help minimise them at times when  it's not practical or possible to use CPAP, such as on short flights or car journeys etc.  It could quite well stop or minimise the snoring, and prevent a stiff neck.

PRODUCT DETAILS AND SIZING

Made of Memory Foam, with washable, anti-microbial, mite resistent, patented Jacquard Velvet covering.

The large size appears to be the most common and is supplied in blue only.  It is designed for those who have a longer neck rather than short or thick.

The regular size comes in either blue or red and is more suitable for children and adults with a shorter neck.

Dr Dakota Neck Cushion Sizing

SizeInternal Height approxColourStraps
Large3.5" (9 cm) * BlueRegular + Small
Regular2.5" (5.8 cm) *Blue or RedRegular + Small

* It is the height of the neck that is more important than the width, as 2 different sized straps are supplied.  When measuring the length of your neck, bear in mind that that the front of the cushion needs fit fairly snugly to fill the gap between the neck and collar bone to prevent the lower jaw dropping, and thus encourage nasal breathing.  The outer height of the neck cushion is larger than the inner.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR SNORERS

If you snore very loud even with your mouth closed, then this product may not work for you.  Please investigate whether your snoring is actually sleep apnoea, which is dangerous if untreated - see this article 'What Is Sleep Apnoea?'

The following video is presented by Jason, a world reknowned USA Sleep Tech showing the positive benefits of this product.  However,  before watching, please bear in mind that the Dr Dakota Neck Cushion does NOT claim this product will cure sleep apnoea, and has responsibly re-vamped the new packaging boxes which in future will say "Snoring & CPAP Accessory."  There is also a full page on their website warning about sleep apnoea.

EASY COMFORT
19 January 2021  |

I bought this to keep my mouth shut at night. It is very comfortable and easy to fit. It does the job very well. My AHI is consistently under 3 now.
I do have use a microfibre square (like a flannel) tucked under the strap so that is over the top and under it, full width, otherwise velcro band irritates neck. I would not hesitate to buy this again.

Don't be sorry, as unfortunately not everything works for everyone, but we're delighted to hear how much the FitLife mask is working for you on your other review 😊

Good idea, but...
07 April 2020  |

I bought the regular model, but I think I really need the large one, which wasn't available. This limits it's effectiveness. The device is much more comfortable than a chin strap. I feel that the product needs a bit more development, but it's certainly a good idea.

It's frustrating we don't have the large size Ian for those that need it, but we're in the early stages of development to help people.

Now having unbroken sleeo.
27 January 2020  |

I have this product now a couple of weeks. The first week or so the issue was with me and not the product as in I don't like items around my neck/ face (getting used to a CPAP mask was a challenge). But the last 3 nights I have fallen asleep with the cushion in place and these are my observations. Because it is keeping my mouth shut first of all I'm not getting a dry mouth. So I'm not waking up with a dry mouth and therefore not drinking water which would mean further broken sleep due to a later trip to the bathroom. So 3 nights of unbroken sleep. The other observation is with my mouth being closed it has vastly reduced leaks and therefore I am getting the benefit of my CPAP. The product is well made and yes a little fiddly with the strap but this should be an issue if you don't have arthritis etc. My only regret is not getting it sooner.

Response:

So pleased to read this review and to read how much better you're sleeping now. The other important issue you raise is that you persevered and just didn't give up after the 1st night. This is the same with bed pillows, which often take a few nights to get used to them. Great news Phil😊

Fantastic solution for dry mouth
14 October 2019  |

I use a full face mask and was getting terrible dry mouth, which was waking me up throughout the night. Have used the Dr Dakota neck cushion for 2 weeks now and it is a complete revelation. Virtually no more dry mouth, and have been getting much better sleeps. What a fantastic product! Highly recommended.

Sore Teeth
29 May 2019  |

I bought this for use with my nasal pillow to keep my mouth shut, it works great and stops mouth leaks and dry mouth, but im finding some of my teeth are very sore in the mornings, i never had problems with grinding before so im not sure why this is happening.

Response:

Sorry to hear this as sore teeth isn't something we've come across. We did try to email you to help but have not had a response so far, so hope you do catch our email with a view to helping you further.
Sometimes, just like with a new bed pillow or similar, people can get a few aches and pains when they're sleeping in better positions (same with the jaw) but hopefully with not hearing from you, your teeth have settled down now 🤞🤞

It really works
22 May 2019  |

This has worked so well for me ! It keeps my mouth closed but is really comfortable. Have been sleeping right through the night since I bought this with no dry mouth and no mask leaks due to my jaw dropping. Cannot believe the difference this has made to me . I thought it was a bit expensive but is worth every penny . Colours are a bit bright but it is well made and fully adjustable. It doesn’t have to be tight either . Can recommend this to anyone who is a mouth breather .

Response:

Good to hear that it's helped with your dry mouth, which is what is hoped will happen for many people by keeping the chin supported. The cushion is not advertised to treat apnoeas, although in some cases it has been proven to help, but never a replacement for CPAP.

ORDERS

Shipping

We try our best to ship all orders received by us Monday-Friday on the same working day if received before 12 noon, and more often than not orders processed before 3pm will be despatched the same day whenever possible.  Weekend or UK bank holiday orders are sent out the next working day.  An automated email is sent when products have been despatched so please check your spam box and add us to your safe senders list.  Also, if you do not receive an email confirmation, please check that you have typed the correct email address in your account.

All orders are sent via 1st class mail within the UK.  Masks and some other more expensive products are always sent via 'signed for' insured delivery and cannot be left in 'safe' places, but there is the option for an alternative shipping address when processing the orders.

Delivery charges are worked out automatically by weight and you can clearly see the delivery charges before making a payment.  On the rare occasion delivery charges are miscalculated by the website, a refund will be sent, as it is not our policy to make money on postage charges and neither do we add the cost of delivery into the price and offer so-called  'free delivery' like some sites and Ebay pressurise sellers to do!

Wherever possible with larger parcels, we try to re-use boxes to keep shipping costs down and protect the environment.

If a product is out of stock and the order contains multiple items, the 'in stock' items will be sent immediately and further items will follow upon arrival with no further postage charges incurred.

Important for International Orders

We can ship most products internationally, but all prices are in UK British Pounds and if paying by debit or credit card the bank will automatically convert to the current conversation rate.  Likewise, if you choose the Paypal option, they will convert into your currency for you as payment is made.

International orders are sent via tracked Airmail, and whilst we're happy to ship internationally, we cannot be held responsible for any delays at Customs at your end, or charges that may be added in your own country, such as customs fees and import tax on delivery, which are determined by your country’s import laws and are beyond our control. Therefore, it is the customer’s responsibility to pay these charges, and certain courier companies will not be able to deliver the goods to you without pre-payment of any charges. From our experience, it appears to be randomised as to which parcels incur extra charges, but please know that all accompanying paperwork is filled in correctly when shipping and there is nothing more we can do, as much as we'd like to.

If you purchase from us out of the UK or you move to another country after purchasing products, please be aware that the warranty for CPAP machines, masks and parts from the manufacturers are under warranty  with the manufacturer based in the UK, so you will be responsible for sending the product back to us and will need to pay postage to get the product back to you after exchange or repair, as the manufacturer will not pay for shipping in any country outside of the UK.

RETURNS

Masks, CPAP machines and and most other products are exempt from a refund or exchange unless faulty due to health and hygiene issues - as stated in our 'Terms and Conditions', and in particular due to the risk of cross contamination as they cannot be re-sold. The Consumer Contracts Regulations 28.(3)(a) confirms exemption as follows:-  "exemption in the case of a contract for the supply of sealed goods which are not suitable for return due to health protection or hygiene reasons, if they become unsealed after delivery."

Unopened (sealed) products in their original packing can be returned within 14 days for a refund of the product cost, but the purchaser is to pay the return postage, and we would advise retaining proof of postage. This excludes any faulty goods, for which postage will be reimbursed.  A full refund for the price of the product will be issued when received by us, less the original postage charges when the order was sent to you.
